It’s my understanding that art for art’s sake is not fruit producing. But art like dance, even square dancing is a higher form because you are sharing a time and participating with others.
There has been a growing community to reviving meaning into the arts with a higher purpose. The Symbolic World is a website where some of this is taking place. The head of it was an icon carver for his Orthodox church. He is rewriting Snow White and Jack and the Bean Stalk. I’m taking a course through them in November about storytelling called Christian Wonder Tales. My medium is storytelling and writing fables or parables. I’m still new to it but it is with the intention of the stories being anchored to a higher purpose
Sounds fascinating, Jon! Have you read any of Rolland Hein’s work? He was a prof at Wheaton for a long time. There’s one called ‘Christian Mythmakers’ that you might enjoy! Also, bring back the square dance 😆💯
You are the second person to mention Sir Gibbie to me in the last couple of weeks. (The first was my therapist, as it's a favorite childhood book of hers.) I really want to read this fairy tale. Much of what you write in here resonates with me. Especially about wanting more out of my reading than to simply be entertained. I want to expand my heart and my mind, grow my soul, learn about different perspectives and cultures, and am seeking to find universal themes in what I read, and always searching for goodness, truth and beauty. I often find quotes that illuminate situations in my own life while I'm reading - and that is gold.
Any of MacDonald’s works would aid the expansion of the imagination and the soul…Sir Gibbie has been stretching for me (it’s one of the Scottish novels, so the dialect in the conversational bits is a challenge) but also so beautiful. If you read it, let me know what you think!
